Period records and the work of modern scholars were revisited to search for clues among primary and secondary sources as to what effect the economic climate in fifteenth-century Europe, especially in the Spanish peninsula, had on the reign of Isabel I of Castile (r. 1474-1504). Sources reveal the queen had focus upon, and therefore a consciousness of the importance of, fiscal matters as key to centralizing royal power. Ysabel was driven by a patriotic vision and sense of regal and religious duties, but she understood immediately the reality of the part fiscal resources played in her political program. Her shift toward absolutism was accomplished by redirecting revenues, which allowed subjugation of the aristocratic class in support of royal designs. As a fundamental step, Isabel retained proprietary rights to the royal patrimony and its commensurate wealth. She was thereby able to rule independently as queen of her realm despite her marriage to Fernando of Aragon.
